After a roller coaster campaign our under 14 footballers fell to Gorey CS in a cracking game in Gorey today. Gorey won their division and had home advantage courtesy of their winning all 3 games in their group. Having lost to St Kieran's last minute goal last week meant that we had to travel to Gorey into their home pirch. Losing the toss and playing against a fairly strong wind and sun, our players held Gorey scoreless for a full 11 minutes. This was a great response to this very strong team. When Gorey scored we went up the pitch from the kick out and scored a point ourselves. Great response! The power of Gorey yielded scores and 2 goals came their way , one courtesy of a well taken penalty. At the other end we were firece unlucky with corner forward Patrick Kavanagh hitting the same post twice with the goal keeper beaten! It was an omen that the luck and hop of the ball was not going to favour us today!
Half time came and we were a full 10 points in arrears - could we fight back?
Yes we could and we did with 1-3 on the board within 6 minutes and we had a real humdinger from there to the finish with goal mouth incidents galore as we battled and fought for every ball from number 1 to 15 and we were just the width of the post away at the finish. The final score was 2-11 to 2-8.
While there was bitter disappointment a the end of the game all the panel of 33 players can justifiably be proud of their performance today and indeed for for the entire campaign which started in September with an emphatic victory over Knockbeg and ended today with a 3 point loss to Gorey. All of these players can look forward to many years wearing the school jersey. Well done to all the players! Great ambassadors for our school.
