Transition Year Students are very busy completing their YSI projects for this year's Young Social Innovator Awards. Our current TY students developed two separate projects this year. Both are aimed at students, staff & parents within our school community.

The students of 4H class worked with Ms Walshe on the 'We Belong' project which hopes to deal with the issues of gender identity. Alot of work went into carrying out surveys amongst the students and staff. This culminated in a workshop facilitated by members of Carlow Regional Youth Services. They gave information and advice to students from 2nd Yr & 5th Yr regarding terms, phrases and acceptable language when speaking about gender idientity issues. It was a very positive workshop.

4K students decided to take the approach of examing our school's appraoch to the intergration of families from different heritages within our school community. Surveys of studetns revealed that over 23 countries are represented in St. Mary's Academy currently, and that over 11 languages are spoken daily in the homes of students. 4K students, in thier approach to the 'I Belong' project, hope to provide opportunities for parents & families to feel more included in school events by over coming language barriers and including other languages on our website.

Both projects will go forward to the National Young Social Innovator Competition this March.
